Counselor vs Therapist
Counselors give advice and help people to discover their own solutions for problems. Therapists analyze the problem as a whole, identifying its root causes so that it may be solved in a permanent fashion.
Counselors tend to focus on the present, where therapists consider the past and future as well. In other words, counselors deal with the problem immediately at hand in a situation, whereas therapists look more towards long-term solutions that can be applied to similar problems in general.
A counselor is someone who can be trusted to listen with empathy, and perhaps provide advice or a course of action. A therapist is more like someone who works on specific issues you have in your life. The difference between the two is that a counselor doesn't necessarily work with you directly, but instead provides support for whatever it may be that you're doing.
For example, someone could be having relationship problems with their significant other. They can go to a counselor and get help working through the issues they're having. The therapist may work with them directly on improving their relationship, but in some cases that is not possible.
Similarly, someone could have a problem working through some of the difficulties in their life. A therapist might work with them directly to help alleviate those issues.
A counselor may also be someone who provides support for a person who is going through a difficult time in their life. For example, if someone loses a loved one and can't find the motivation to get out of bed, they could go talk with someone who will listen and provide them with advice or recommend some kind of course of action.
A therapist also provides support, but usually with more specific goals in mind.
The difference between a therapist and a counselor is that the former offers advice, whereas the latter provides insight. As such, it would seem to follow that counselors are more useful than therapists. The path forward for those suffering from mental illness can be difficult to see from where they stand; their perspective is often limited by their own feelings, thoughts and perceptions of what may lie ahead in life. A counselor helps them move beyond this.
A therapist, on the other hand, seems only to offer a solution. A counselor can help a person see outside their own boundaries and into the world around them. The counselor helps someone find themselves in all that is around them; they are given perspective by getting answers from others.
A therapist is more selfish in that they offer a solution for the patient's problem. A counselor helps someone to find themselves, and then provides advice if it seems appropriate.
A counselor seeks to understand the other. A therapist seeks to help the other.
A counselor listens. A therapist speaks.
That seems to be about what a counselor is. As such, it would seem that counselors are more useful than therapists.
I think your question is about which counselor or therapist would be better to see, but I don't like that kind of approach. To me it says a lot about the person who asks these questions. Why do you have to pick one? The fact is that there are many different types of counselors and therapists out there with different professional backgrounds and specialties, as well as personal styles and interests in addition to various other factors.
Surely the best thing for you to do is meet with some potential counselors or therapists and see which ones make you feel comfortable, relaxed, safe, curious, optimistic and encouraged. After all, that's what counseling is about - feeling better than when you walked into the room.
As for the difference between counselors and therapists, to me it just seems like a slight distinction. Sometimes you'll see one or the other in a doctor's office, but I believe both are simply psychologists with different specialties. They all have had extensive training and many years of experience helping people through various stages of their lives.
To say that one is better than the other seems to be a matter of opinion. I suppose if you make more money, then you could go to someone who charges a lot for their services. But then again, maybe not everyone likes cash and some people don't have it.
I personally would suggest that you see someone who is a good fit for your personality and circumstances. As long as they are licensed, I think the best thing to do is get out there and start talking with people.

Counselors and therapists are very similar in that they both help people through their mental issues. Some of the differences between the two is that a therapist will try to get a person to see how their actions effect others, while also trying to make them understand the world around them better. A counselor on the other hand focuses less on making you think about your surroundings (although this can be beneficial) as they do about getting you back into reality after something traumatic has happened.
A counselor is more likely to help you after a difficult event, while a therapist will try and get you in the mindset of an average person.
A therapist is also usually more expensive than a counselor, as they are trained professionals who have to go through years of schooling and therapy themselves. On the other hand, counselors can be cheaper or even free depending on your circumstances.
Both counselors and therapists are able to help people with their mental issues, but I would have to say a counselor is the better of the two.
